Habit groups

Start the year with a small group, not a resolution

January is when most people start something. The second week is usually when it gets hard: the novelty has gone, the routine is not there yet, and nobody would notice if you stopped.

That second week is what a group is for. On WhereIsMyBuddy you pick one small thing, choose the days, and do it with people doing the same. You check in, they see it. In week two, that is often the difference.

What a group can look like

Make it small enough

The habits that last are usually the ones small enough to do on a bad day. Ten pages, not a book a week. Ten minutes, not an hour. You can always do more; the check-in only asks for what you said you would do.

Start before January

You do not have to wait for the first. A group that starts in December has had its awkward first week by New Year’s Day, so January begins a few weeks in instead of on day one.

Gentle or Committed?

If this is a new habit, start Gentle: a missed day resets your streak and nothing more.

If you have tried before and it faded by February, try Committed. Five missed scheduled days in thirty and you are out of the group for a week, which is a reason to keep going in week two.

Join a group, or start your own

Search Discover for “the habit you want” to see the public groups already running, and join one in a tap. Private groups take an invitation, or a request the owner approves.

Or start your own in six short steps: name it (“Ten pages a day”), pick a cover, set the level, choose the days, decide who can find it, and look it over. On the free plan you can run one public group and one private one, with room for twelve people in the private one. Invite people with a link, or let them find you in Discover.

Questions people ask

Do I need friends to join?

No. Join a public group in Discover, or start one and let people find it.

Is it free?

Yes. Checking in, groups, your weekly buddy, the Sunday story and your year are all free. Plus is optional. What Plus adds

What if I miss a day in January?

Then you check in the next day. On Gentle, a miss only resets your streak.

Can I take on more than one habit?

Yes, though one is easier to keep. You can join as many activities as you like once the first one has stuck.
